Organized Playroom Design
Well hello there! Today I’m tackling that room parents everywhere both love and fear…the Playroom. Sure, it corrals your children’s never-ending mountain of toys and games to one space…but then, eventually, it has to be cleaned. Maybe your playroom even pulls double duty, like mine, and also serves as a guest room when company comes calling. Regardless, you’ve probably contemplated how best to organize and store your children’s toys, making cleaning it easier and more enjoyable for everyone. Allow me to introduce you to my playroom’s new best friend: a large cube organization system that’s both attractive and easy for the children to use. Now, does the playroom clean itself with this new system in place? Umm, no…but it sure does make it easier and quicker.
I cannot tell you how much I am enjoying the cube storage cabinets from Target. They’re attractive and modern, with clean lines…not to mention, the hold a ton of cube bins (8 each!). I opted to purchase two, placing them side by side to create a long credenza behind my sleeper sofa. The sofa is pretty basic, but contains a foam mattress that is comfortable, especially once it’s transformed into sleeper and topped with a cushy mattress pad and feather bed.
These amazing cube storage bins took a while to find…after searching countess big box and organizational stores for blue and white striped bins, I finally found the right ones on Amazon, for an amazing price. They have a classic blue and white feel, and will work with most any paint choice, should I ever relocate them. The pineapple lamps I found in our attic, from long ago when I first graduated college…back then, they looked like this:
I believe these were purchased from JC Penney Home about 15 years ago (yikes)…so I’ve linked a similar one in the picture above. A simple linen drum shade and a couple of fresh coats of white paint was all this pair needed to achieve a clean, updated look. I have plans to attach a trim, possibly in a Greek Key pattern, along the bottom of each shade, for an added pop of interest and texture.
We also own the table, chairs, and storage cart, which occupy a corner of our playroom. While the square table worked well for the two older girls, I am quickly finding I may need to invest in a larger tabletop space for their endless crafts and drawings. I hope this glimpse into our playroom offers you some sort of idea or inspiration on how to organize your own space. Having the bins at child height makes it easy for them to pull out and replace toys, without having to worry about opening storage container lids. Easy breezy. Even for my two year old!
